Assembling a Dining Table: Leg Alignment and Wobble Fixes

A Dining Table Should Not Wobble

A wobbly dining table is almost always a leg-assembly issue — and it's fixable in five minutes. Here's the assembly and the wobble cure.

Attach the Legs to the Apron

Most dining tables have an apron (the frame under the top) and four legs. Bolt the legs to the apron first, not directly to the top. The apron distributes the load and keeps the top flat.

The Leg Bolt

The leg bolts up through the apron. Tighten the bolt until the leg shoulder meets the apron — don't crank. An over-tightened leg bolt pulls the apron and the leg doesn't hang plumb.

Check Square

Measure the diagonals (corner to corner). If they differ, the apron is racked. Loosen the bolts, square the apron, re-tighten in a star pattern.

Attach the Top

Set the top on the apron and screw it from underneath. Pre-drill — a screw through the top surface ruins the table. The top should sit flat; if it rocks, the apron isn't square.

The Wobble Fix

If the table wobbles after assembly, one leg is short. Slide a thin shim (a business card or a felt pad) under the short leg until the table is stable. For a permanent fix, a furniture leveler foot (threaded into the leg) adjusts height.

Don't Drag

A dining table dragged across the floor snaps the legs. Lift to move. Four felt pads on the feet let it slide without damage.
