IVAR Is Untreated Solid Pine
The IKEA IVAR system is solid pine — cabinets, shelves, and frames that can be painted, stained, or left raw. The assembly is straightforward, but the wood is unfinished and needs care. Here's the build.
Pre-Finish Before Assembly
IVAR ships untreated. Sanding and finishing (paint, stain, or oil) is far easier before assembly — you can reach every face. A coat of pine oil or a primer before build saves hours.
The Cam and Bolt Joints
IVAR uses cam locks and through-bolts. The through-bolts are the structure — tighten them fully. A loose through-bolt lets the frame rack; a tight one makes IVAR solid.
Square the Frame
IVAR frames are tall and narrow — they rack easily. Measure diagonals before tightening the back panel. The back panel (a pine board, not cardboard) is structural; nail every nail.
The Shelves
IVAR shelves rest on wooden dowels. Insert all four dowels per shelf at the same height. A shelf on three dowels sags. The shelves are adjustable — choose the height before loading.
Anchor
A tall IVAR (over 80 inches) is a tip-over risk. Anchor the top to a stud. The included anchor is for this — use it.
Painting IVAR
Prime with a wood primer, then two coats of paint. The pine grain shows through a single coat; two coats give a smooth finish. A painted IVAR looks custom.
