Assembling Nursery Furniture Before Baby Arrives: A Timeline

Don't Wait Until the Last Trimester

Nursery furniture assembly always lands on the to-do list late, and it's always more work than expected. Build a timeline so the room is ready — and aired out — before baby comes home.

Order by Week 28

Crib, dresser/changer, glider, and shelving should be ordered by week 28. Shipping delays and backorders are the norm, especially for convertible cribs.

Assemble by Week 32–34

Book assembly between weeks 32 and 34. This leaves a buffer for missing parts (retailers take 2–3 weeks to ship a replacement) and lets the room air out before the baby sleeps in it.

Convertible Cribs: Read the Stages

A "4-in-1" crib has four sets of hardware instructions in one booklet. Confirm the daybed and toddler-bed conversion kits are included — many are sold separately and discontinued years later.

Anchor the Dresser

The changer on top of the dresser makes it top-heavy. Anti-tip anchoring is non-negotiable in a nursery. A pro will install it so the strap is invisible from the front.

Air Out New Furniture

Particleboard off-gasses for a week or two. Assemble early, leave windows open when possible, and run an air purifier before the baby arrives.

Book nursery furniture assembly in NYC — safe, anchored, and ready before the due date.
