Build the Shelf So It Stays Full
A bookshelf looks harmless empty and becomes dangerous the moment you load it. Weight limits and anchoring are the two things that separate a shelf that lasts from one that fails.
Know the Weight Limit
IKEA BILLY holds about 30 lbs per shelf evenly distributed. KALLAX cubes hold 29 lbs per shelf. Exceeding it causes permanent sag — the shelf bows and never flattens. For heavy art books, choose a solid-wood shelf, not particleboard.
Distribute the Weight
Put the heaviest books on the bottom shelf. A top-heavy bookshelf tips; a bottom-heavy one doesn't. This single habit is more important than the anchoring.
Anchor to the Wall, Period
Every tall shelf ships with an anti-tip bracket. In NYC rentals, use a short toggle bolt in drywall or a wood screw into a stud. The strap should be tight — no slack. At move-out, the hole is smaller than a nail hole.
Check the Back Panel
The thin back panel is what keeps the shelf from racking side-to-side. Install it flush and pin it with every included nail; skipping the back panel is the #1 cause of a leaning bookshelf.
Leave a 1-Inch Gap
Keep the shelf an inch off the wall so a baseboard doesn't push it forward and create a tip angle.
