The Difference Between a Moving Company and Moving Labor

The Difference Between a Moving Company and Moving Labor

Two Services, One Goal

"Moving help" covers two very different services, and booking the wrong one wastes money. Here's the difference and which one fits your move.

Moving Company (Full-Service)

A moving company provides the truck, the driver, the movers, the packing, and the insurance. You pay one flat or hourly rate for the whole job. Best for: long-distance moves, busy professionals who want zero involvement, and moves where you don't want to drive a truck.

Moving Labor (Labor-Only)

Moving labor provides the people — you rent the truck, POD, or van, and our crew loads, supports, and unloads. You drive (or hire a driver). Best for: local NYC moves, budget-conscious movers, and anyone who already has a vehicle or a storage container.

The Cost Difference

A full-service NYC studio move runs $400–800; the same move with labor-only (you rent a $30 van for the day) runs $160–250 in labor plus the van. The savings come from you handling the vehicle.

What's the Same

Both provide background-checked, vetted movers, furniture blankets, a dolly, and disassembly/reassembly. The difference is the truck and the driving.

Which to Choose

  • You have a van or a friend with a truck: labor-only.
  • You're moving more than 50 miles: a moving company (labor-only crews are local).
  • You want to do nothing: full-service company.
  • You're on a budget: labor-only, rent the van yourself.

The Hybrid

Some labor-only crews (including ours) also offer a van with the driver-pro at an hourly rate — the middle ground. You get the vehicle and the muscle without the full-service price.

Book NYC moving labor — or ask which you need.
