Estimating Moving Hours
Hourly moving labor only works if you book the right number of hours. Too few and the crew rushes and damages things; too many and you're paying for standing time. Here's a working estimator.
Studio or 1-Bedroom, No Elevator Issues: 2 Hours
A studio or small one-bedroom with a working elevator and a 50-foot carry from door to truck fits in the two-hour minimum. Add 30 minutes per flight of walk-up stairs.
2-Bedroom Apartment: 3–4 Hours
Two bedrooms, a living room, and a kitchen usually need 3 hours with a two-person crew, 4 if there's no elevator or the carry is long.
3+ Bedroom: 4–6 Hours
Three bedrooms and a living room runs 4 hours with three movers. Add an hour per extra flight of stairs.
Items That Always Add Time
- A piano (add 1.5 hours and a specialty crew).
- A sleeper sofa (add 30 minutes — they're heavier than they look).
- More than 30 boxes (add 30 minutes).
- A narrow stairwell (add 1 hour per flight over the first).
What Saves Time
Packed boxes, disassembled furniture, a reserved elevator, and a parked truck close to the door. Each one shaves 15–20 minutes.
Book a Buffer
Book one more hour than the estimate. If you don't need it, you're not charged for it; if you do, you're not stuck with a crew that has to leave.
