A Squeaky Bed Frame Is Loose Joints
A bed frame squeaks when two pieces of wood or metal rub — and that rubbing is always a loose joint. Here's how to assemble a bed so it's silent.
Tighten Every Joint
Every cam lock, every bolt, every dowel — snug. A bed with one loose joint squeaks under the sleeper's weight. Go around every fastener after assembly and again after a week.
The Felt Pad Trick
Where two wood pieces touch and can't be tightened further (like a slat on a rail), a small felt pad between them silences the squeak. Felt furniture pads are $5 and stop the wood-on-wood noise.
The Wax on Slats
Wooden bed slats rub on the side rail. A rub of candle wax on the slat where it meets the rail makes the joint silent. Re-wax yearly.
Check the Center Support
A bed with a center support beam and leg doesn't flex as much — and flex is what causes squeaks. Install the center support; a bed without it sags and creaks.
Metal Frames
Metal bed frames squeak at the bolt joints. Tighten every bolt, then a thread-locker (Loctite) on any bolt that keeps loosening stops the squeak permanently.
The Floor
A bed on an uneven floor rocks and the frame flexes with every movement. Level the bed (shim a leg) — a stable bed is a quiet bed.
