Bunk Bed Assembly Is a Safety Job
A bunk bed is the one piece of furniture where assembly errors cause injuries. Every year, thousands of bunk bed injuries come from poor assembly or missing safety rails. Here's the build and the safety checks.
Assemble in the Room
A fully built bunk bed won't fit through a door. Build it where it will stand. Assemble the frame, then the bed slats, then the rails — in that order.
The Two Safety Rails
A bunk bed must have a guardrail on both long sides of the upper bunk, extending the full length, with no gap wider than 3.5 inches (a child's head can fit through a larger gap and trap). Confirm both rails are installed and bolted — a rail held by two screws is the minimum.
The Ladder
The ladder attaches at the top to the frame and at the bottom to the rail or floor. A ladder that wobbles is one that hasn't been bolted — tighten every bolt.
Mattress Thickness
The upper bunk mattress must be at least 5 inches below the top of the guardrail. A too-thick mattress puts a sleeping child at rail height — the fall risk goes up.
Check Monthly
Bunk bed bolts loosen with use. Check every bolt monthly for the first year, then quarterly. A loose bolt at the top bunk is a collapse risk.
No Kids Under 6 on Top
CPSC guidance: no child under 6 on the upper bunk.
