The Desk Is the Easy Part — the Setup Isn't
Assembling a desk is 30 minutes; setting up a home office desk (monitor, keyboard, cables, chair height) is the job that makes it usable. Here's the full setup.
Assemble the Desk
Build the frame, attach the top, and level it. A desk that wobbles is unusable for typing — level it and tighten every bolt.
Monitor Height
The top of the monitor screen at eye level. A monitor too low forces a hunch; too high strains the neck. A monitor arm or a riser brings the screen to height. The monitor an arm's length away.
Keyboard and Mouse
Keyboard at elbow height, forearms parallel to the floor. A keyboard tray or a lowered desk gets the height right. A mouse on the same level, close to the keyboard — reaching for a mouse strains the shoulder.
Cable Management
A desk with dangling cables is a mess. Mount a power strip under the desk, route cables through a sleeve or a grommet, and use a cable tray under the desktop. The front of the desk stays clean.
Chair Height
Chair seat at knee height (feet flat), backrest supporting the lower back. A chair too low compresses the thighs; too high and the feet dangle. Adjust the chair, then the desk, then the monitor — in that order.
Lighting
A desk lamp from the side (not behind the monitor) reduces glare. Indirect light on the keyboard, not on the screen.
