IKEA Sofas Assemble in Sections
An IKEA sofa (KIVIK, VIMLE, etc.) ships in three boxes: the seat, the back, and the arms. It assembles with bolts and clips. A newly assembled IKEA sofa feels loose — here's why and how to fix it.
Assemble the Seat First
The seat is the base. Bolt the seat frame together, then attach the legs. The legs bolt into pre-drilled holes — hand-tighten, then a quarter turn with a wrench.
Attach the Arms
The arms bolt to the seat frame. Two bolts per arm, into the side of the seat. Tighten both before moving on — an arm with one bolt can pivot and strip the second hole.
The Backrest
The backrest clips onto the seat. Line up the clips and push down until they click. A backrest that's not clipped rocks and squeaks.
Why It Feels Loose
A new IKEA sofa feels loose because the bolts aren't fully seated. Go around every bolt and give it a final tighten. The frame firms up considerably.
The Cover
IKEA sofa covers stretch over the frame. Pull the cover taut and tuck the elastic under the frame. A loose cover looks sloppy and shifts — smooth it and tuck every edge.
Re-Tighten After a Month
IKEA sofa bolts loosen in the first month of sitting. Go around every bolt after 30 days. A re-tightened sofa is solid for years; one that's never re-tightened stays loose.
