A Couch Move Is a Technique
A couch is the item most likely to damage walls, doorframes, and itself. Here's how to move one without destroying anything.
Measure Both Doorways
A couch fits a doorway if its smallest dimension (usually the depth) is less than the door width. Measure the couch and both the old and new doorways before moving day.
Take the Legs Off
Unscrew the feet. Most couch legs are 2-4 inches — the difference between clearing a door and getting stuck.
Wrap It Fully
A moving blanket around the whole couch, taped at the corners. The blanket protects the couch and the walls. A bare couch rubs every doorframe it touches.
Carry It On-End
A couch goes through a door on its end, not flat. Two people, one at each end, rotate the couch 90° and walk it through. The long side is vertical.
The "Hook" Turn
At a tight corner or a door that opens inward, "hook" the couch: stand it on end, angle the top through first, then rotate the bottom. This is how pros get a couch through a door it "doesn't fit."
Don't Force It
A couch that jams in a doorframe and is forced will crack the frame, tear the upholstery, and gouge the wall. Back it out and try a different angle.
Reversible Sectionals
A sectional comes apart. Separate the sections and move each one — far easier than one huge piece.
