How to Move a Dining Table (Protect the Top)

How to Move a Dining Table (Protect the Top)

A Dining Table Top Is the Vulnerable Part

A dining table is heavy and the top is the finish — a scratch or a gouge ruins it. Here's how to move it.

Remove the Legs

Unscrew the four legs. A table with the legs on won't fit most doorways and takes up truck space. Bag the bolts and tape them to a leg.

Protect the Top

The top is the finish. Lay a blanket on the top, then a sheet of cardboard, and tape it. Don't tape the finish — the tape leaves residue. The cardboard protects the blanket from the truck's walls.

The Apron

The apron (the frame under the top) is the structure. Wrap it in a blanket. The apron is what the legs bolt to — protect it.

Load It On-Edge

The table top goes on-edge against the wall of the truck, padded. The legs bundle separately. A table laid flat in the truck has boxes stacked on it — the top gets damaged.

The Leaf

A table with a removable leaf — take the leaf out and wrap it separately. The leaf is the easiest piece to lose.

Reassemble First

The table is reassembled early — it's a surface for unpacking. Load it last on the truck so it comes off early.
