How to Move a TV Without Cracking the Screen

How to Move a TV Without Cracking the Screen

A TV Screen Is Glass — Treat It That Way

A flat-screen TV is a thin sheet of glass over an LCD/OLED panel. One knock and the screen cracks — the TV is totaled. Here's how to move one.

The Original Box Is Best

The foam inserts in the original box cradle the TV exactly. If you kept the box, use it. If not, a TV moving box ($25) with foam corner pads does the job.

Pad It in a Blanket

No box? Wrap the TV in a moving blanket, screen-side padded with a layer of cardboard. Tape the blanket (not the screen). The TV goes standing up, not flat.

Stand It Upright

A TV lays down = a cracked screen. The TV moves and rides standing up, secured so it doesn't tip. A TV laid flat in a truck vibrates against the floor and the screen fractures.

Two People

A 55-inch TV is awkward for one person. Two people, one at each end, carry it. A TV dropped is a TV totaled.

Don't Press the Screen

The screen is the fragile part. Carry by the frame edges, never the screen. A thumb pressed into the screen can crack it.

In the Truck

The TV stands against a wall, secured with a strap, with a blanket between it and the wall. Nothing loaded against the screen.

Temperature

Don't leave a TV in a hot truck for hours — the panel can be affected. Move it last on, first off.
