An Upright Piano Is a 400-lb Problem
An upright piano weighs 300-500 lbs, has fragile legs, and an inner mechanism that jolts out of alignment. It's the one item where DIY is a bad idea. Here's the move.
Why It's Different
The weight is concentrated; four people can't get a grip. The legs snap on stairwells. The action (inner hammers) can shift, putting the piano out of tune or out of commission.
A Piano Board
A specialty mover pads the piano, straps it to a board, and carries it with four people and a ramp. The board gives the grip four people can't.
When Not to Move It
- An upright up more than one flight of walk-up stairs — the risk-to-value is often wrong.
- A piano worth less than the move.
- A spinet — the action is fragile and parts are discontinued.
Re-Tune After
Every piano needs tuning 2-4 weeks after a move. Budget for a tuning on top of the move.
Consider Donation
If the piano isn't worth the move, schools and churches often accept donated pianos — some pick up free.
