Artwork Breaks at the Glass and the Frame
A framed photo or a canvas is fragile at the glass and the frame corners. Here's how to pack it.
The Picture Box
A "picture/mirror box" is a flat, telescoping cardboard box. One box fits a 30x40 frame; two boxes telescope for larger. ~$5 each.
Tape the Glass
An "X" of painter's tape across the glass. If the glass breaks, the tape holds the shards and protects the artwork and the movers.
Pad the Corners
Corner protectors (foam or cardboard) on each frame corner. The corners are where frames chip. A blanket over the whole frame, then the box.
Canvas Without Glass
A canvas (no glass) needs the surface protected. A sheet of glassine (acid-free paper) over the paint, then a blanket, then the box. Don't let anything press the painted surface.
Pack Vertically
Frames pack standing up, not flat. Flat frames crack under the weight of boxes. Vertical, against the wall of the truck.
The Flat-Screen TV
A TV is packed like a large picture — upright, padded, in a box. A TV laid flat is a cracked screen.
