How to Ship a Large Package (Without Overpaying)

How to Ship a Large Package (Without Overpaying)

Shipping a Large Package in NYC

A large package — a piece of furniture, a big box — ships differently than a small one. Here's how to not overpay.

The Carriers

  • USPS: cheapest for packages under 70 lbs and under 130 inches (length + girth). Above that, USPS won't take it.
  • UPS/FedEx: for packages over 70 lbs or oversized. Pricing is by dimensional weight (the size) and the weight.
  • Freight (LTL): for items over 150 lbs. Palletized, shipped by a freight carrier.

Dimensional Weight

Shipping is charged on the greater of actual and dimensional weight. A large, light box (a lamp shade) is charged by its size, not its weight. Pack tight — a smaller box is a cheaper ship.

The Discount Platforms

Pirate Ship and ParcelMonkey offer discounted UPS/USPS rates (up to 80% off retail). For a one-off large package, these platforms save the most.

Furniture Freight

For furniture, uShip connects you with freight haulers who bid on the shipment. It's cheaper than a traditional freight quote; the hauler is already going that route.

Pack to Survive

A large package is handled by multiple people and machines. Wrap it in bubble wrap, pack it in a double-walled box, and fill all gaps. A damaged-in-transit claim requires the packaging to have been adequate.

The Insurance

Declared value insurance is usually $100 included; more is extra. Insure for the full value — a lost or damaged large package is a big loss.
