How to Tip Movers
Tipping movers is standard in NYC. Here's how much and how.
How Much
15-20% of the labor cost, cash, at the end of the move. A $300 move tips $45-60. For a half-day (2 hours, $200), $30-40. For a full day (6 hours, $600), $90-120.
Per Mover or Total
Tip the total, split among the crew. Hand each mover their share in cash at the end, or give the total to the lead and ask them to split. A per-mover tip of $20-40 each is common for a standard move.
When to Tip More
A walk-up move (extra physical effort), a piano or appliance move (specialty), or a move where the crew was exceptionally careful or fast. A 20-25% tip for a hard move is appreciated.
When to Tip Less
A move where the crew was late, careless, or the bill was inflated. A tip is for good service — a 10% tip or no tip is acceptable for poor service. But address the issue with the service, not silently.
Cash, Not Card
Movers prefer cash. A tip on a card may not reach the crew for weeks. Cash, in the hand, at the end.
Food and Drink
Offering water and (for a longer move) a snack or lunch is appreciated. It's not required, but a fed crew is a careful crew.
