IKEA KALLAX Shelf Assembly: Leveling, Wall Anchoring, and Weight Limits

IKEA KALLAX Shelf Assembly: Leveling, Wall Anchoring, and Weight Limits

The KALLAX Is Not a Freestanding Bookshelf

The KALLAX looks like a simple cube shelf, but a 4×4 KALLAX fully loaded with books weighs over 200 lbs — and it's top-heavy. IKEA's instructions include a wall anchor for a reason: an unanchored KALLAX is a tip-over hazard.

Assemble It Flat First

Build the KALLAX flat on the floor, inserting every dowel and cam. The most common error is tightening one side fully before the opposite side is together, which racks the frame. Snug every joint, then final-tighten in a star pattern.

Check Square Before Standing

Measure corner to corner. If the diagonals differ by more than 1/8 inch, the shelf is racked. Loosen, square, re-tighten. A racked KALLAX wobbles and the inserts don't line up.

Anchor It

Use the included wall anchor if you have studs, or a toggle bolt for drywall. The anchor goes at the top, pulling the shelf toward the wall. An unanchored KALLAX tipped by a climbing child is a documented fatality risk — anchor it even if you don't have kids.

Weight Limits

A KALLAX cube holds ~29 lbs. Books are fine; a single cube of large art books is the limit. Don't load the top with heavy items — it raises the center of gravity.
