The MALM Bed: Deceptively Simple, Easy to Get Wrong
The IKEA MALM bed frame looks like a weekend project, but it's one of the calls we get most often to rebuild. Almost every "wobbly bed" complaint traces back to the same handful of mistakes.
Mistake 1: Skipping the Wooden Dowels
The dowels aren't decorative — they align the side rails and carry shear load. Forgetting them means the frame flexes and the slats pop out within a week.
Mistake 2: Overtightening the Cam Locks
Turn the cam lock until it's snug, then stop. Over-rotating strips the particleboard and the joint never tightens properly. If you hear cracking, you've gone too far.
Mistake 3: Installing the Slats Backwards
MALM slats have a curve. Flat side faces down; the arch lifts up to give support. Flipped slats feel fine for a month, then sag.
Mistake 4: Not Checking the Mid-Beam
The center support beam carries most of the weight. If it isn't seated in both notches and bolted down, the bed will bow in the middle.
Mistake 5: Building It in the Wrong Room
Assemble a MALM where it will live. A queen frame won't fit through most NYC bedroom doors once built, and disassembling to move it risks the dowels.
