IKEA PAX Wardrobe Assembly: How Long It Really Takes (and When to Hire a Pro)

In the IKEA showroom, the PAX wardrobe takes four minutes to admire. In your bedroom, it takes a Saturday. Here's how long the job really runs by configuration, the mistakes that stretch it to a weekend, and how to tell when hiring an assembler pays for itself.

Real build times by configuration

Measured over hundreds of real jobs in NYC apartments and Long Island homes:

  • Single 50cm module, no doors: 45–60 minutes — the frame is the easy part
  • Full frame (2 × 100cm), no interior: 1.5–2.5 hours
  • Full frame with interior fittings (shelves, drawers, hanging rods): 2–3.5 hours — drawers and KOMPLEMENT interiors take longer than the frame itself
  • Adding hinged doors: 1–1.5 hours per pair, plus alignment time
  • Adding sliding doors: 1.5–2 hours — top rail leveling is everything, and in an apartment with a slightly out-of-true ceiling, it's the difference between doors that whisper and doors that fight
  • Per additional module in a multi-module run: 45–75 minutes

A full 2 × 100cm PAX with interior and sliding doors, built by one experienced person: 4–6 hours. Two pros working together: about half that, because the frame genuinely needs four hands at the tipping and standing stage.

The four mistakes that double the time

1. Building where it won't fit. A finished PAX frame is heavy, tall, and rigid — it will not come back apart nicely. Build it lying down in the room it will live in, with at least 6 feet of clearance to stand it up. If your ceiling is under 8 feet, check the standing height before you commit.

2. Skipping the rail-leveling step on sliding doors. The instructions spend three panels on the top rail for a reason. If it's not dead level, the doors drift, bounce, or jam — and re-leveling a finished wardrobe means partially disassembling it.

3. Mixing up drilled and plain holes. PAX frames have both. One wrong hole means re-doing a whole panel, or worse, a stripped cam-lock hole that never tightens properly again.

4. Not inventorying KOMPLEMENT parts first. A missing drawer runner discovered at hour three means the whole job pauses until IKEA ships the part. We open and check every box before the first panel goes up — it's the single biggest time-saver on the job.

When hiring an assembler pays for itself

The honest math: if you enjoy the build, have the tools, and have a free Saturday — build it yourself. But hire a pro if any of these are true:

  • You're in a walk-up or tight apartment — carrying 100+ pounds of panels up stairs, then needing 6 feet of standing clearance in a small bedroom, is where DIY jobs go wrong
  • You're doing two or more modules, or sliding doors — the alignment work punishes first-timers
  • Your weekend is worth more than the flat rate — a PAX with doors runs $189+ assembled; a ruined Saturday doesn't come back
  • You're on a move-in deadline — pros build PAX systems weekly and quote a flat rate, so a slow instruction manual doesn't cost you extra

Every assembler we send is background-checked, insured, brings every tool, anchors to the wall on request, and carries out every scrap of packaging. Payment happens after you approve the finished build.
