The POÄNG Is a 10-Minute Build
The IKEA POÄNG chair is one of the easiest pieces to assemble — a frame, a cushion, and a handful of bolts. It's also one of the most-reupholstered pieces, because the cushion cover wears. Here's the build and the cushion swap.
Frame Assembly
The POÄNG frame is two side pieces, a seat, and a back, joined by through-bolts. Bolt the seat to the sides, then the back to the sides. The layer-bent wood frame only flexes the way it's designed if every bolt is snug — hand-tighten, don't crank.
The Cushion
The cushion attaches with two straps that loop around the frame and hook. Feed the strap through the frame, hook the closure, and tighten. A loose cushion slides — tighten until the strap is taut.
Replacing the Cushion Cover
The POÄNG cushion cover unzips. Unzip, remove the foam, and slip a replacement cover (IKEA sells them, or third-party covers fit). The foam can be refreshed with a quick hand-wash and air-dry.
Frame Refinish
The bent-wood frame can be refinished with a light sand and a coat of teak oil. Don't use a power sander — the thin laminate sands through.
The Wobble
A wobbly POÄNG is a loose bolt. Check the four frame bolts and snug them — the chair should flex but not rock.
