How to Label Boxes So Unloading Takes Half the Time

How to Label Boxes So Unloading Takes Half the Time

The Labeling System Movers Love

A box labeled "kitchen" beats a box labeled "stuff." A box labeled with its room and a number beats both. Here's the system that makes unloading fast.

Label the Room, Not the Contents

The crew unloading your truck doesn't need to know what's inside — they need to know where it goes. Write the destination room in large letters on at least two sides of every box: "BEDROOM 1" or "KITCHEN."

Add a Number for Priority

Number each box in the order you'll want to open it. Box 1 = sheets and shower curtain. Box 2 = coffee and mugs. Box 30 = holiday decorations. At unload, "open first" boxes go to the front of the room.

Color-Code by Floor

If your new place has multiple levels, stick a colored dot on each box — red for upstairs, blue for ground floor. A mover can route a box without reading it.

Mark "Fragile" Honestly

Only mark boxes that are actually fragile. If everything says fragile, nothing does — and movers stop trusting the label. Reserve it for glass, ceramics, and electronics.

Photograph the Layout

Before the truck arrives, take a photo of where each piece of furniture will go. Hand the photos to the crew. A picture answers "where does this go?" faster than words.

The 10-Minute Labeling Habit

Label each box the moment you seal it. Labels added later are wrong half the time, and unlabeled boxes become mystery boxes that slow the whole unload.
