Marketplace Negotiation Tips (Before You Commit)

Marketplace Negotiation Tips (Before You Commit)

How to Negotiate on Marketplace

A Marketplace listing price is a starting offer. Most sellers expect negotiation. Here's how to negotiate without losing the item.

Research the Price

Check what similar items sell for on Marketplace. A listing 30% above comparable is negotiable; a listing at market is less so. Know the market before you offer.

Offer in the First Message

A low first offer is expected. "I can do $X, can pick up today" — a specific offer with a pickup timeline is more likely to be accepted than a "what's your lowest?" message.

Pick Up Fast

A seller will accept a lower offer from someone who can pick up today over a higher offer from someone who can pick up "this weekend." Speed is leverage.

Don't Lowball

An offer below 50% of the listing price insults the seller and they stop responding. A reasonable opening is 70-80% of the listing.

Be Polite

A rude message kills the negotiation. A friendly, specific offer opens the conversation. Sellers sell to people they like.

Know When to Walk

If the seller won't budge and the price is above market, walk. There will be another listing. A "must have this one" attitude overpays.

The Inspection Lever

If you find a flaw on inspection, you can re-negotiate. "I see the drawer sticks — I can do $X if you'll hold it." A found flaw is a price reduction.
