Moving a Couch in a NYC Walk-Up: The 4th-Floor Problem

Moving a Couch in a NYC Walk-Up: The 4th-Floor Problem

The Couch That Won't Fit the Stairs

A couch is the single item that most often derails a NYC move. It's long, heavy, and rigid — and stairwells in prewar buildings have a 90-degree turn that defeats it.

Measure First, Carry Second

Measure the couch's longest dimension, its height, and the stairwell width at the turn. The rule of thumb: if the couch is longer than the stairwell is wide plus the height of the railing, it won't make the turn.

Try It Feet-First, Arm Over the Railing

Most couches go up best "on end," with the back against the wall, feet pointing up the stairs. Walk it one step at a time, pausing at every landing to rotate. Never force a turn — a jammed couch can crack the plaster and the frame.

Remove the Legs and Feet

Unscrew the feet and remove the legs before carrying. Those four inches are often the difference between making the turn and not.

When to Hoist Through a Window

If the stairwell math says no, hoisting through a window is faster and safer than forcing the stairs. A fourth-floor window hoist needs at least two strong people and a strap system — and a clear sidewalk below.

Know When to Say No

Some couches simply won't fit any prewar walk-up. A pro will tell you before you're stuck on the landing with a jammed sofa. Better to sell it on the curb and buy new than to break both the couch and the wall.
