Moving Truck Sizes: Which One You Actually Need

Moving Truck Sizes: Which One You Actually Need

The Right Truck Size

A truck too small means two trips; too large and you pay for space you don't use. Here's how to pick.

Pickup Truck / Cargo Van

A cargo van fits a studio or a one-bedroom with minimal furniture. ~$30-60/day. Best for a small move with a few large items and boxes.

10-Foot Box Truck

A 10-foot truck fits a furnished studio. ~$20-40/day plus mileage. The smallest box truck — a studio's worth fits in one load.

15-Foot Box Truck

A 15-foot fits a one-bedroom. ~$30-50/day plus mileage. The most common rental for a one-bedroom move.

20-Foot Box Truck

A 20-foot fits a two-bedroom or a large one-bedroom. ~$40-70/day. Needs a larger parking spot at both ends.

26-Foot Box Truck

A 26-foot fits a three-bedroom house. ~$60-100/day. Requires a wider turning radius and a commercial parking spot.

The Rule of Thumb

When in doubt, go one size up. A truck with a little extra space is far easier than a truck that's too small and requires a second trip.

Mileage

Most rentals include a mileage allowance; overage is ~$0.40-0.79/mile. A local NYC move stays within the allowance.
