Moving With a Toddler
A toddler is a mobile, curious, under-foot hazard on moving day. Here's how to keep them safe and busy.
Off-Site Is Best
The safest option is a friend, a sitter, or daycare for the day. A toddler at home during the move is an escape risk (open doors) and a fall risk (dollies, boxes).
The Safe Room
If the toddler must be home, one room — with a door that closes and a "Do Not Open" sign — with toys, snacks, and a caregiver. This is the containment strategy.
The Busy Box
A box of new-to-them toys (thrift store finds, borrowed) appears on moving day. The novelty keeps a toddler busy for hours. Save this box for the move, not before.
The "Helper"
A toddler can "help" with small, safe tasks — putting light items in a box, carrying a pillow. A toddler given a job is engaged; one with no job is in the way.
Watch the Doors
An open door on moving day is an escape. Assign one person to toddler-door duty — every door that opens, the toddler is accounted for.
The First Night
The toddler's room set up first — crib/bed, a few toys, the nightlight. A toddler in their own space on night one settles. A toddler in a chaotic apartment does not.
Snacks and the Routine
Keep the snack and nap schedule. A hungry, overtired toddler is a meltdown. The move can wait 20 minutes for a nap.
