The Walk-Up Move
A walk-up move is harder, slower, and more expensive — but manageable with the right approach. Here's the survival guide.
Measure the Stairwell
The stairwell is the constraint. Measure the width, the turn at the landing, and the ceiling height. A couch that fits the door won't fit a tight stairwell turn.
Take the Legs Off
Unscrew the feet from couches, beds, and dressers. Those four inches are often the difference between clearing the stairwell and getting stuck.
Use a Stair Dolly
A stair-climbing dolly (tri-wheels) rotates up each step. It turns a two-person, four-flight carry into a guided push. The single best tool for a walk-up.
Carry On-End
A couch or a bookcase goes up on its end, long side facing up the stairs. Two people, one at each end, walk it one step at a time.
Protect the Walls
A scratch on the stairwell wall is usually the furniture's corner, not the wall's fault. Wrap every corner in a moving blanket before it leaves the apartment.
Pre-Map the Route
Walk the route before carrying anything. Note the turns, the railing height, and the low fixtures. Knowing where to rotate saves a stuck piece halfway up.
It Costs More
A 5th-floor walk-up adds roughly an hour to a studio move. The labor is real — book the time.
