Moving With Pets in NYC: Keeping Them Calm and Safe

Moving With Pets in NYC: Keeping Them Calm and Safe

The Pet on Moving Day

A pet experiences moving day as a day of open doors, loud strangers, and disappearing furniture. The biggest risks are escape (an open door = a lost pet) and stress. Here's how to manage both.

The Safe Room

Pick one room — ideally a bathroom — and put the pet in it with food, water, a bed, and a litter box, before the movers arrive. Tape a "Do Not Open — Pet Inside" sign on the door. This is the single most effective step.

Board or a Friend for the Day

If the move is long or the pet is anxious, the best option is to remove them entirely — a friend's apartment, a daycare, or a boarder for the day. A pet that isn't home during the move can't escape or stress.

Update the Microchip and Tag

Before moving day, confirm the microchip has your new address and your phone number. A pet that slips out on move day is found with an old address on file.

Keep the Carrier Out for Days

A cat carrier that appears the morning of the move is a trap the cat won't enter. Leave the carrier out for a week with a blanket inside so the cat treats it as a bed, not a cage.

The First Night at the New Place

Set up one room at the new apartment with the pet's bed, food, and litter box, and keep them there for the first 24 hours. A full apartment to explore at once overwhelms a pet; one room at a time lets them settle.

Keep the Routine

Feed and walk at the usual times on moving day. A pet that eats and walks on schedule is calmer than one whose routine has vanished.

Dogs vs. Cats

Dogs usually travel fine with a person in the car. Cats are the bigger risk — they hide, they bolt, and they don't travel well. A cat belongs in a secured carrier, in a quiet car, with a person.
