Picking Up From a Stranger
A Marketplace pickup is a transaction with a stranger in their home. Here's the etiquette and the safety.
Confirm Everything Before You Go
The item, the price, the address, the pickup window, and the building's entry (buzz code, freight elevator). A confirmed pickup is a smooth pickup; a "I'll text you when I'm there" pickup is a wait.
Be On Time
A seller holding an item for you is waiting. Be on time, or message if you're delayed. A no-show buyer is blacklisted by sellers.
Bring Exact Change or Venmo Ready
Have the payment ready. A seller who has to make change or wait for a Venmo is a seller who's annoyed. Confirm the payment method in advance.
Don't Haggle at the Door
The price was agreed in messages. Haggle at the door and the seller may refuse the sale. If you find a flaw on inspection, a respectful re-negotiation is fine; a surprise lowball is not.
The Carry
The seller usually can't help carry. Bring a pro or a second person. Don't ask the seller to help load — that's not their job.
Daylight and a Second Person
Pick up in daylight, and don't go alone. A vetted pro is a safe second person. If the pickup feels off (a sketchy building, a vague seller), trust your instinct and leave.
