A Package Held at the Post Office
A USPS package held at the post office (after a failed delivery or a hold-for-pickup request) is ready for pickup. Here's how.
The Hold
USPS holds a package at your local post office if you requested hold-for-pickup or if a delivery attempt failed and the carrier left a notice. The notice has the post office address and the package's availability.
The ID
USPS releases the package to the person named on the shipment, with a government ID. To authorize a pro, you can write a signed note authorizing the pickup person, with a copy of your ID — USPS generally accepts this for a standard package (not for certain restricted items).
The Notice
Bring the delivery notice (or a photo of it) — it has the tracking number and the hold location. The pro uses this to claim the package.
Redelivery
Alternatively, you can request USPS redelivery for a specific day (free). A pickup is for when redelivery won't work — you need it today, or you won't be home for redelivery.
Same-Day
A USPS pickup from the post office is same-day if the post office is open. Tell us the post office hours and the notice details.
